Yama Jinwoo Kim of Kingswood Coffee places sixth in World Cup Tasters

Kingswood Coffee’s Yama Jinwoo Kim has finished sixth place in the World Cup Tasters Championship (WCTC) in Budapest, Hungary.

Yama competed in the quarter finals, then semi finals of the championship on 14 June, correctly guessing 6/8 cups in a time of five minutes and 55 seconds.

His efforts helped him place an impressive six overall in the world championship, although narrowly missing out on the top four moving into the WCTC Final round on 15 June.

The 2017 finalists include Los Chan of Craft Coffee Roaster of Hong Kong, Freda Yuan of Caravan Coffee Roasters in the United Kingdom, Amano Satsuki of Mamezo Coffee in Japan, and Hsuan Chuang of Bu Cafe in Taiwan.

The Finals of the WCTC will commence at 10.30pm AEST tonight, with the awards ceremony at approximately 1.30am AEST on 16 June (for those keen to stay up late and follow the live action).

The WCTC awards the professional coffee cupper who demonstrates speed, skill, and accuracy in distinguishing the taste differences in specialty coffees.

In this competition format the objective is for the cupper to discriminate between the different coffees. Three cups are placed in a triangle, with two cups being identical coffees, and one cup being a different coffee. Using skills of smell, taste, attention and experience, the cupper identifies the odd cup in the triangle as quickly as they can. A total of eight triangles are placed in each round, with the top four competitors now competing in the Finals to determine the next World Cup Tasters Champion.
